What is Korean food?
The main staples in Korean cuisine are rice with various seasoned vegetable side dishes such as kimchi. Korean food is also largely based on pork and spiciness; with meat for other dishes.
The two most popular meat dishes are Bulgogi (grilled marinated beef) and Samgyeopsal (pork belly) with pepper sauce.
Another common dish is Naengmyeon which is buckwheat (sweet potato or pumpkin) noodles in a sweet, cold soup.

Why is Korean Food so Popular?
Korean food has been trending for a while now, alongside Korean culture.
The popularity of Korean food has increased with the ascension of K-pop internationally and the advent of new flavors and trends (such as the Dalgona coffee).
Korean food is popular because it is healthy, flavorful, and inexpensive (at least, when in Korea).
In other words, Korean food has been propelled to globalization thanks to the Hallyu wave.
Tips on How to Eat Korean Food?
Koreans eat rice or noodles for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Korean food is all about sharing, with special emphasis on communal dining. The main dishes are usually meat (mostly pork), vegetable dishes (dishes like Bibimbap 비빔밥) and seaweed soup (Miyeok Guk 미역국).
– Be aware that portions are large and shareable in Korea.
Korean cuisine is famous for its variety of side dishes that are served alongside the main dish. There are usually three types of side dish served in a traditional Korean meal – kimchi, soup and saewoojeon.
A few pointers:
- Korean dishes rely on broth and sauces, so it’s important to enjoy them with the rice.
- Koreans use chopsticks, but they also eat with their hands. So be prepared to dig in and get messy.
- Some dishes involve using lettuce wraps (with your hands, you take lettuce, put inside the different side dish, then wrap and eat), others require using a spoon and fork.
- Most Korean dishes are spicy, so if you’re not a fan of spice, prepare your palate before you go in!

Where to Eat Korean Food in Lausanne
Bibibowl 비비볼 (한식당)
This restaurant is popular for its bibimbap bowls that are both delicious and customizable. You can choose your own mix of rice, vegetables, meats, sauces and toppings to make the perfect bowl for you.
Visitors can also enjoy their meal at one of the outdoor tables or head upstairs where they have a private room for larger groups.

Isshin Sushi
The Isshin Sushi is a Japanese restaurant in Lausanne. It’s located in the center of the city, in Chauderon, close to all the buses. For some guidance, you will find it just after the italian restaurant Cavallo Bianco and the Kiosk Via Express.
As you can guess by the name, they serve mainly sushi. If you want to taste something other than sashimi or teriyaki dishes, you can try their Tteokbokki – the popular Korean food made stir-fried rice cakes.
They used to also serve Bibimbap, but I don’t know if that is still the case.

Osio
Osio is a Japanese pastry shop and tearoom located in Prilly right at the edge of Lausanne.
This bakery is also a new addition (Spring 2021) in town. They used to only be found only at the market on Saturdays in Lausanne.
Osio offers Japanese-style cakes, tarts, and pastries extremely beautiful and cute. And also good.
For your korean palette, they serve non-other than the famous Batbingsu (my favorite korean summer dessert).

Au Gourmand – Barbecue Coréen
Au Gourmand is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Lausanne. They offer many dishes of the traditional Korean cuisine.
They serve Bibimbap, Ramyeon, Galbi, Bulgogi and Samgyeopsal.
